As someone who is a mostly self-taught guitarist, I can tell you the internet has attributed largely to my growth as a musician. However, while it is possible, you do need to be aware of the advantages and disadvantages of teaching yourself to play guitar online.
The first big advantage is cost. You can learn a lot about playing guitar by watching instructional videos on YouTube and searching Google for no fee. However, if you are completely new to playing guitar, it can be hard to find the information that is relevant to where you are at as a guitar player. This is why private guitar lessons are appealing. With private lessons, you get specific instruction that is at your current level. It’s nice to be able to get feedback on your progress. However, again, weekly private lessons at $20 an hour add up quite fast. This may not be ideal.

These courses usually cost the equivalent of one or two private lessons, but come with a complete plan of instruction so you can go from being a beginning guitarist to an advanced guitarist.
